RULES AND REGULATIONS

GENERAL RULES for DRIVERS & PIT CREW

·        *****ABSOLUTELY NO CHILDREN under the age of 16 allowed in derby pit from 8:30 a.m. until after all activity has ceased in the pit area and all heavy machinery is no longer being operated.  Pit members ONLY in the pit area.  THIS RULE WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED THIS YEAR. This is for safety and insurance reasons*****.

·        *****Drivers and pit crew members are responsible for keeping their area clear of non authorized personnel…one warning will be given to pit crew members by our pit area security, and then you will be disqualified. For safety reasons, the pit area must remain clear of non-authorized personnel, including ALL CHILDREN under the age of 16 years!!*****

·        All drivers and their pit crew MUST report to the registration gate on Saturday and have the pit passes attached by officials. Only 4 pit passes per car will be issued. Additional pit passes can be purchased for $20.00 each and each additional pass must be accompanied by a signed waiver.

·        Drivers MUST be 16 years or older.  Any person under 18 must produce a release signed by a legal guardian.  ****NO DRIVERS, NO CREW UNDER AGE 16, NO EXCEPTIONS!!!****

·        ALL drivers and pit crew members MUST sign a waiver BEFORE competing.

 ·        ****Registrations will NOT be refunded for any reason****

·        A D.O.T. rated helmet in good condition must be worn as well as shatterproof eye protection. A neck brace is highly recommended to prevent driver injuries.

·        All drivers must wear a set of CLEAN COVERALLS or UNIFORM while on the field.  Failure to comply will result in disqualification.  No synthetic materials, which will melt in the event of fire.  Nomex or other fireproof/retardant materials recommended.

·        All driver complaints regarding the running of the heats are to be directed to the JUDGES. The judge’s decision is FINAL.

·        ****Any driver or associated pit crew who DISTURBS, HARASSES or IGNORES ANY OFFICIAL, (i.e., judges, technical inspectors, pit security, registration ladies, or Greenwood Demolition Derby official) during an event will automatically be DISQUALIFIED and banned from all future events for the remaining season.*****

·        Any driver or associated pit crew found to be under the influence of alcohol or any other recreational substances during an event will automatically be disqualified and banned from all future events for the remaining season.

·        Any driver, who cannot drive their vehicle out of the arena, at the end of their heat, must remain in their vehicles and wait for officials to remove them unless it is an emergency. This is subject to judges decision. This is for your safety!!

·        Any vehicle that is pushed out of the arena during the event is automatically deemed out of the heat.

·        NO late entries will be accepted.  Drivers must register and run their cars on the first day.

·        Heats will be run on a set schedule. This is to prevent lengthy delays between heats. Any car that has not entered the arena in the allotted time will be DISQUALIFIED from that heat.

PERMISSIBLE VEHICLES

FULL SIZE:  Any full size two wheel drive passenger vehicle, sedan, coupe, fastback or station wagons.

NO!!!!

1.     Imperials, Hearses, Ambulances, Convertibles, T-Tops, sports cars.

2.     Imperial frames or sub frames.

3.     Studded Tires on paved surfaces

4.     Altering of suspension, including body lifts

5.     Air or coil-over shocks except original equipment

6.     Cooling expansion tanks except original equipment

7.     Repairs that exceed strength of original equipment

8.     Reverse or extended leaf spring shackles or lift kits

9.     Starting fluid systems or nitrous systems

10. Bumpers other than original

11. Inverted bumpers or re-enforced bumper

12. Foul language painted on car

13. Excessive hole through firewall

14. Passengers

15. Redi-rod through bumpers or isolators

16. Welds to repair frame cracks. No welding of any body seams except driver’s door seam.

17. Sandbagging

18. OBJECTS attached to roofs of vehicles.

VEHICLE PREPARATION
The following items MUST be removed:

·        All glass, including windshield

·        Fuel tank

·        Trim

·        Dash

·        Upholstery

·        Loose and foreign material from cockpit and trunk

·        Lights and lenses

·        Plastic grills

·        Chrome (except bumpers)

·        Hub Caps, Center Caps and Trim Rings

·        Trailer Hitches

·        Air conditioning system must be discharged

·        Horn Trim Rings

·        Seat Belt Ratchets

REQUIRED MODIFICATIONS

FIRE ACCESS:  Two holes must be cut in hood, one on each side, to expose carb for fire.  Holes must be 8” in diameter.

DOOR BARS:  Drivers and Passenger side doors must be protected by a door bar, or cement in doors.  This bar must be 8” wide, ¼” channel iron (6” – small car) for drivers side and 6” minimum (4” – small car) for passenger side.  These bars must not exceed a total length of 6’6” each.  Door bars must not extend more than 6” ahead of the front edge of the front door seam.  It also may not extend rearward further than the front edge of the rear wheel opening.  Door bars must be attached to the sides of the vehicle at bumper with a minimum of ¾” or larger bolts on each door bar.  These bolts must pass completely through the side of the vehicle, then through a minimum 6” square washer plate of minimum ¼” steel then through a nut.  Holes through door bars and washer plates must closely fit the bolt.     

HEAD POST:  All vehicles must have a secure upright minimum 2” diameter steel head post.  This may be a separate piece of pipe from floor to roof, or a part of the rear cross-brace fastened to the roof only.  Head post should be bolted to the roof with at least ½” or larger bolts and large washers on the outside of the roof.  If the head post is of the separate type, the bottom end should be fastened to the floor in a similar fashion.  The head post must fit snugly against the back of the driver seat.  A head rest plate (8” X 8”) of ¼” steel, must be welded to the front of the head post to support the drivers helmet.  The headrest plate should be substantially padded on the forward surface.  Telescopic head posts must be pinned to prevent collapse in the event of a roll over.

DOORS, TRUNKS, HOODS:  Must be secured shut with maximum 1” link chain or ¾” bolts.  Hood and trunk may be secured in only 4 points.  The rear edge of the hood must be restrained from moving backward by a steel restraining bar or chain.  This bar or chain must extend over wiper sill area, cover windshield opening and bolt through top, center of roof.  Bar must be minimum 2” wide, 1/8” steel flat bar.  It must be bolted through the rear of the hood or through the top of steel vent area between hood and windshield opening.  See optional modifications section for maximum sizes of fasteners.  Trunks must be fastened by bolts or chained down.  No welding trunks shut.

SEAT BELTS, WINDOWS:  All vehicles must have a functional three-point seat belt system, although 5 point seatbelts are strongly recommended.  All attachments must be secure.

ENGINE AND DRIVE TRAIN:  The engine must remain stock: i.e. dodge car-dodge drive train.  (See optional modifications section for exceptions.)  Motor mounts must not be relocated.  The exhaust system must be vent free of the engine compartment.  A flame arrestor or air cleaner must be attached to the carburetor intake.  Flame arrestors must be larger than the diameter of the carburetor.  A transmission “puke tube” must be securely fastened to dipstick tube.  It must drop below firewall to the ground.  I must be secured to the body of the vehicle as well.

          ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:  Battery must be relocated to the passenger side floor of the vehicle.  It must be totally enclosed in a box and fastened to the floor with bolts, nuts and washers.

          FUEL SYSTEM:  A custom fuel tank must be used.  Securely fasten into the rear seat of the vehicle.  Maximum tank capacity is five gallons.  Tank cap must not leak if tank is inverted.  A large drain hole must be cut in the floor directly beneath the tank.  Any standard consumer grade of pump gasoline may be used.  A steel flash shield must be installed to enclose the gas tank.

           COOLING SYSTEM:  A fresh car’s radiator must remain in the stock location.  If the original radiator has been destroyed, it may be replaced with any appropriate radiator in the stock location.  Alternately, the radiator hoses may be joined together with a piece of pipe or a “foo foo “ valve.  No more than a total of five feet of radiator hose may be used.  The ONLY permitted coolant is water.

          TIRES AND WHEELS:  Passenger vehicle stock steel rims and maximum 8 ply street tires only.  Maximum one tube per tire, one tire per rim, inflated with air only.  15 inch maximum tire/rim size.

          BUMPERS:  Stock bumper for vehicle used only.

          STOCK DERBY CAR PREP:  All cars MUST meet basic prep rules as outlined in preceding pages.

 OPTIONAL MODIFICATIONS

1.     24 volt starting system consisting of two batteries.  Second battery must be installed as per rules for a single battery.

 2.     Removal of engine parts, i.e. fan blades, alternator, air pump, pistons…

3.     Motor and Transmission mounts must be strengthened.

4.     Welding permitted on steering, differential and perimeter of hydraulic bumper cylinders sleeve.  Drill cylinders first to release pressure.

5.     Electric fuel pumps permitted.  Must be wired through the main power switch.

6.     Distributor may be protected with one piece of maximum ½” flat plate.  The plate must not be more than 1” larger than the distributor cap on sides or top.

 7.     Floor shifts may be cut through floor but holes must be kept to minimum size and must be covered with floor mat or other materials.

8.     After market bucket seats permitted if securely mounted.  No fiberglass seats.

9.     A piece of 8” steel plate no larger than 6” square may be attached to the radiator in front of the fan pulley.

10. The front hood and trunk lid / tailgate of the vehicle may be secured shut with up to four bolts or ready-rods.  These may be a maximum of 3’ in length of 1” diameter.  Only two of the four bolts may be attached to the frame of the vehicle, or in the box structure in unibody vehicles.  Washer plates of ½” or less thickness steel may be used.  These washer plates may not be larger than 24” square and must be made of flat plate.

11. All washer plates may be maximum ½” flat steel plate 24” square.

12. Body mounted shock absorbers may have the mountings strengthened by the use of larger washers.

13. Wheel well openings may be enlarged to the limit of the stock tires.  Sharp edges must be bent over or otherwise made safe.

14. Three 3/8” maximum bolts may be used to bolt together hood around the fire access holes.

15. Hood hinge bolts where they fasten to the hood may be replaced with maximum 3/8” bolts.  Two per side only.

16. Carburetor swaps permitted.  Must be stock carb mounted to stock intake for engine used with maximum number of barrels or less for engine used.  Adaptor plates are permitted.

17. Headers are permitted.

18. An inner door “T-bar”, same thickness as door bar is permitted.  It must be bolted to door bar and frame only.  No welds, 4 bolts maximum.  This bar is to prevent injury from below door bar hits.  (Not that any of you have ever actually done a door bar hit.)

19. A cross-brace must be installed between the door bars behind the driver’s seat and across the dashboard area above the steering column.  The cross-braces must be made of a minimum 2” pipe welded to minimum 6” square washer plates of ¼” steel on both ends.  Telescopic braces must be pinned to prevent collapsing on impact.  Steering column must be chained up to the dash bar.  Hardtop cars must also have a diagonal brace from the driver’s side of the rear cross-brace to the passenger side frame or lower door sill.

20. Cemented passenger doors may be welded if grader blades are NOT used. (This is to keep the door from flying open)
